Attractions of Courthouse Tavern Museum

  • Exhibits on the history of King and Queen County, the history of the Courthouse Tavern building, and the history of the Courthouse Green Historic District.
  • Presentation of the building as a period, turn-of-the-19th-century, "tavern." This includes the restoration of the Tavern Dining Room, the Tavern Parlor, and Two Period Bedrooms.
  • A public library and archives of King and Queen County history and of its citizens, as well as Internet access to assist with additional genealogical research.
  • A complete Touch-Screen DVD introduction to the Museum and all of its exhibits.

The King and Queen County Historical Society operates the Courthouse Tavern Museum at King and Queen Court House in cooperative partnership with King and Queen County, Virginia, to bring the museum's services to the general public. The Museum is owned by the County and leased to the Historical Society. The County pays for all utilities, insurance, maintenance, and similar expenses. The collections and endowment are owned by the Historical Society. The Historical Society provides volunteers to open the museum and is responsible for exhibits, education, acquisitions, endowment and related activities.

The Commonwealth of Virginia and the Jessie Ball duPont Fund each provided a 50 percent grant in 1999–2000 for rehabilitating the building to be used for the Museum. Aid from these sources, combined with the generosity of our many visitors and friends, help the Historical Society serve the public in accordance with its traditional standards of excellence.
